Australia vs England 2nd Ashes Test Highlights Day 2

Watch cricket highlights: Australia vs England 2nd Ashes Test, Day 2 from Lord’s played on July 17, 2009.

Scoreline: England 425 all out, Anderson 29 – Hilfenhaus 4 wickets
Australia 156/8 – Mike Hussey 51, Katich 48 | James Anderson 4 wickets

Had speculated on Day 1 of the Ashes that Anderson’s batting buddy must be Cook. As it turns out he is, and Anderson did today what his mentor did yesterday – annoy most, barring the really ardent English fan. With the ball however, his first spell in particular was very very reminiscent of one of those World Cups (2003 possibly) when he’d exploded big time on the international arena. At the other end, Flintoff was searing and constantly above the 90 mph mark, often in the 94-95 range. Broad too looked good towards the end of the day, while Onions pretty much scratched his head and bowled the kind of stuff Harmison would on a disinterested day.

For Australia, Hussey pulled out a couple of stunning shots until the moment that had KP merrily prancing around Flintoff.

However, what chilled me to my loins about the Katich-Hussey thing, was that I noticed myself actually liking Simon Katich. When the ball’s moving around, times are tough etc, you can (of late) almost bet on him to blank-expression and all hang around and generally piss off the bowler. I hate myself and want to die.

Russell Crowe was a bit confusing at the end with his usage of we Australians – always thought he was some sort of cousin to Martin Crowe. As it turns out, bred in Aus.

So that’s that on Day 2 – Australia 70 odd adrift of the follow-on, though whether that really is of relevance is a cumbersome thought best cast aside.

    chief,
please do not reveal the match status before posting the highlights. it helps many of us unfortunate ones who consider your fab website as their “live” telecast.

    cheers,

I want to enjoy cricket. I am extremely disappointed with the performane of Pakistan cricket team. I believe in enjoying good cricket. How could I do that? I dnt want to be stressed out by cricket as I know loosing is part of the game. any suggestion.

  6. Shariq Ansari says:

    Hello Shahid Iqbal,

Nobody enjoys being on the losing side. Do you think Aussie fans are enjoying what is happening to their team right now. Consider ourselves lucky that a team as unpredictable as Pakistan has actually won a 20-20 worldcup and been in two 20-20 finals. Pakistan is due for at least another consecutive 100 defeats based on the occurrence of this improbable tournament victory. Lets also thank ourselves that the only team we really care to beat namely India, refuses to play us right now because of the mumbai bombings, losing to India would really hurt.

  7. William says:

Shahid – yes. There are two ways.

    1. Through long prayer you become enlightened to the extent you do not care about nation or country. Thus you simply enjoy the sport.

    2. Because this is very difficult – too difficult for most of us – you have to do this. Ignore any game affecting your own country Pakistan (who are excellent and great fun to watch. Nevertheless you must ignore them). When you watch other countries, enjoy the spectacle of countries losing. (The Germans call this pleasure “Schadenfreude”). By this method even in a world cup you are guaranteed pleasure every single game, because someone always loses. You can enjoy the final because someone loses. This may sound strange to you but try it. It works! I wish you years of cricket watching pleasure – Ensh’Allah!

  8. Leong15 says:

Thanks for posting the vids – being stuck in the States means no coverage of the Ashes. Really appreciate the effort.

  9. VV says:

Thanks for the postings. I am an indian cricket fan. I really enjoying watching the Ashes. It is good to see some team (other than India and SoAfrica) finally matching the aussie cricket standards, albeit against a much depleted aussie team.

  10. Ben says:

Thanks for the highlights, appreciate it.

Man I hate Shane Warne, he just sounds like an idiot.

  11. M says:

Thanks a load for the coverage, it’s awesome! Especially when it isn’t on TV. Much appreciated.

  12. Vedant says:

The ball from Hilfenhaus to Strass was superb.

  13. Sree says:

Thanks to the team that manages this web site.
It’s good to see the Ashes, and also watch the hapless pakistanis being crushed by Lankans.

  14. gilly says:

great bowling by england . i loved it when freddie was bowling it reminded me of 2005

  15. Sahan says:

Thanks for the clips mate. Following from Gatineau, Quebec.

  16. anon says:

    LOL at Flintoff’s theme music!!

  17. JS says:

Goodness me Shahid, you really don’t have a clue about sport, do you?

Ask yourself this question; how many times have England won the World Cup?
How about; how many times have England won the Twenty20 World Cup?
Before 2005, when was the last time England had won the Ashes?

Do you know the answer? Do you have any idea of the disappointment that goes with those answers?

Following a sports team is not about gleaning enjoyment from winning. It’s nothing of the sort. It is about support, hope, will and passion. It is about supporting them or castigating them when they lose, thanking them and praising them for making your week when they win.

As an England fan who has followed them since the late 80s I have experienced more failure of the England team – and we’re talking SERIOUS failure here – than almost any generation of any nationality’s fans. Ignominy, embarrassment, grovelling – the lot. You cannot be an England fan if you are in for the winning. But I tell you this; all the lost World Cups, the Ashes whitewashes, the 46 all outs, the catastrophic collapses, the Martin MacCague’s and Peter Such’s it’s all worth it. All the pain, the disappointment, the shouting at the screen and the teasing from your friends it is all worth it.

Because no matter how bad it is, the win – like the 2005 Ashes – it always exceeds the pain of defeat. Indeed the worse the pain before, the better the enjoyment of the victory after.

And that’s what keeps a true fan going, knowing that all the failure can be erased even for just a moment or a single game or a glorious, all-time great series, eventually.

Don’t be upset by your team’s failure. Accept it. Feel bad, but know that glory is just around the corner. And if it doesn’t come next time then maybe the next one after that. Know that each successive failure makes next time’s success all the sweeter.

It is that hope that keeps a sports fan going and it is the affirmation of that hope which is their reward.

If you can’t understand that or if you can’t bare the failure then go support Manchester United, and the New York Yankees. But don’t call yourself a sports fan.

  18. chris says:

just found, well just searched your website, and living here in Bulgaria I appreciate the service :) no BBC free service on their website, and after todays play it needs to be watched………

  19. toshashank says:

Whats up with stupid music on freddie ? Its lame. are these clips prepared by some kid ?

Kind of close. An excitable kid. Do you like kids. – Admin

  20. Napalm says:

Thanks fro the great highlights but the music is annoying and pointless

Ok. Didn’t work the way I intended – Admin

  21. ray vison says:

what’s with that awful music that comes on when Flintoff is bowling – why????

  22. Hareshkumar says:

When Ricky Ponting was given out, he showed his frustration on umpire but if you recall he was the same player when ganguly edged to the slip which Clarke did not catch the ball cleanly, he (Ponting) was showing his finger pointing to the finger that Ganguly was out and Ganguly just went off smiling disbeliefing his luck……

  23. Patrick says:

I think the music is hilarious! I laughed out loud. Admin, I like that you put your personal style into these productions. I would, too, if I were you. I encourage you to keep it up.

And thanks a lot for moving the URL, by the way. A small change made a big difference.

  24. Darren says:

Thanks again today, a cracking England performance has really brightening my gloomy Ottawa day.

Don’t listen to the haters about the music, anything is better than listening to Warney babble pointless cliches and platitudes to all that will listen. However, when the music came on, I half expected you to edit it so that the drums kicked in when Freddie took a wicket, but alas not so.

Also, to the Pakistan fans, I wish I could be disappointed with a cricket year that included a 20-20 world cup win. Keep up the good work!!1

  25. youtitta says:

Is Hussey’s 50 not a viable milestone to include in the highlights? I would think with such an informative website that you would have some criteria of what is noteworthy to inform us about. Now I’m swayed to think that this in not an impartial broadcast, but a biased one.
Maybe less of the theatrical heavy metal and more on the content would be more of an educational tool (as your intro suggests) for us to digest than a lesson in 80’s glam rock!
    Get it together!

  26. Justin says:

Brilliant coverage and thanks for all the effort – it really is a lifeline to an Englishman stranded in Chicago with no TV coverage!

Must add my tuppence-worth to the ‘theme music’ for Freddie: truely awful (and worst of all very distracting), cease and desist immediately and you will be forgiven!

  27. wigiman says:

i like the music but i got nervous because i knew it ment that someone was about to be bowled not playing a shot. had to have two shots of vodka to calm me down

  28. loljk says:

BAD MUSIC BAD MUSIC BAD MUSIC MAD BUSIC MAD BUSIC BAD MUSIC ON ALL TEH VIDEOS ALL OF THEM

  29. sam says:

sorry, am i the only person who thinks flintoff is the most overrated player in the world. no credit to hoggard or harmy, if they had chris read keeping who knows sidey, hoggy and harmy would have had at least 50 wickets apiece and they would be seriously good. now we are relegated to a bowler who bowls in short spells then breaks down. i cant believe he chose to quit test cricket and not odis/20 20s.. or at least attempt to remodel his action. sellout.. on the flipside. jimmy bowled really well and you really miss stuey clark when the runs are aleaking.

  30. Jim says:

Great website Admin. Is anyone else having a problem getting the videos to load fully? Gets about half way through on each then returns to start. Had no problems prior to today. Appreciate your help. Cheers

  31. Abasilum Smith says:

The English is showing some spine finally to these Australians. Hope they get the remaining wickets and not allow The Australians back into the game. By the way Freddy is looking good in the bowling department but the batting is just dismal in the first innings.

  32. Ro says:

    Hi,
Admin, thnx for the nice website. Wht about the West Indies and Bangladesh match? Is it possible to post the highlights of this match? Thnx again for running a brilliant website.

  33. Raj Purhit says:

Thanks for the awesome highlights ! *Classic*

  34. chrissie says:

why is music playing while the cricket highlights is show?

  35. Geoff says:

Great to be able to get the highlights here in Tokyo. However, the music thing sucks and Warne is still an idiot. More highlights, less music and no Warne please.

  36. Joe says:

I agree, would be far better if you didn’t post the scores along with the link. I am using this as my ‘live’ game as the live match is on while I sleep mostly.

    Thanks,

    Joe in Hong Kong

  37. Luke says:

Just a small note on the Russel Crowe thing, he was born in New Zealand and lived here till he was 13, then moved to Australia. Speaking as a New Zealander….the Aussies can have him!

  38. Footy Fan says:

Great highlights – love the music during Flintoff’s overs. As an Indian – I am really sad to see him go. IMHO he is one of the top bowlers in the world right now – def top 3 all rounders.

    Viva Test Cricket!!

  39. Hercules says:

Thank you so much for posting these! I’m stuck in Canada!

  40. adminrulzzzzzzz says:

    admin is GOD……

  41. Joshie says:

What happen to the 5 days of hightlights with the West Indies V Bangladesh matches….Seems like u all dont care or have respect for West Indies cricket….Yes we know stuff going on with them…but dont forget they have achieve what many others have not.

  42. AW says:

Further to Russel Crowe, you were right on the other count, too – he IS Martin Crowe’s cousin.

  43. paul parker says:

Sorry admin – please ditch the music! it is truly awful. Otherwise thanks for the great service

  44. Faraz says:

Can u please give me the 2nd flintoff spell music , the metal remix one – thats nice , please share thanks

I whacked samples of it from the net. Don’t have it as a complete song. It’s by a band called Northern Kings – Admin

  45. Cracker Jack says:

hey admin …great work, despite everyone’s aversion to your outrageous humour (re: puppy samples etc)…simon katich is a good player (I’m south african, by the way), every team needs someone like him to stick it out, nice foil for hughes too… he may not be pretty but in cricket effectiveness counts as much as style…anyway..shot again///

  46. pradeep says:

    folks,
thanks for bringing up the highlights … Great job and keep the good work up .
    cheers.

  47. Daveo says:

Hey well played England. You did a great job today – and Australia didn’t show much conviction in hanging around.

I don’t really understand all these people who whinge about the highlights – beggers can’t be choosers right? I personally didn’t really understand what you were trying to say with the song Admin – but it was pretty funny and certainly didn’t deserve all the bad comments. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it – pretty simple really. I think you’re doing a great job Admin and as an Aussie in USA I’m grateful.

    Regards,
    David
