Cricket highlights from Day 2 of the 2nd Melbourne Test – South Africa vs Australia 2008.
Scoreline: Australia 394 all out. Pup (88) and the wagging tail.
South Africa 198/7. Graeme Smith 62, Jean Paul Duminy 34 no.
Australia hung around for a while this morning, with Brett Lee striking crucial boundaries while Michael Clarke played with better run-scoring intent today as compared to his overnight knock. Dale Steyn was searing, while Ntini was swatted around.
South Africa seemed ok to overhaul the Aussie 1st innings with Smith around despite a couple of wickets. De Villiers didn’t help things by hobbling around and struggling to even get off the mark – surprising for someone who played a dominant role in one of the best run-chases ever.
Peter Siddle who impressed in India coming in place of the then-injured Stuart Clark was the man of the day with three wickets, while Mitchell Johnson continued to be the Brett Lee of until a year back – the man Ponting turns to when something is needed in the game. Siddle also provided a funny moment with a wild appeal for LBW after bowling de Villiers. Could tomorrow be the day when Australia tell the world that the raucous sounding of their death-knell is perhaps premature. And will Duminy reinforce his stature.
