Scoreline: 303/4. Phil Hughes century 115 (151), Simon Katich 108.
A super hundred by Phil Hughes in his 2nd test – to start with, both Hughes and Katich had some nervy moments. But as seen in the 1st Test Day 3, Hughes almost always scores after a testing moment. Surprisingly the South Africans didn’t really test him with the short ball which he evaded like mad at Johannesburg. But all the excitement he promised there came good here – his backlift and exaggerated follow-throughs combining with quick scoring. If one’s going to watch Australian cricket, Hughes seems like a welcome viewing-offset to Katich. There are some moments when he looks like a laterally-inverted Michael Clarke. While a McGrath-like bowler could (at this point in his career) take him out time and again; given he’s only 20, looks like an exciting Australian opener has finally arrived on the scene.
South Africa yet again had a bad referral day and some moments missed in the field. But they pulled things back after tea – a good effort considering the listlessness that seemed to have crept in with around 180 up and no wicket gone at one stage. By end of day, Mike Hussey had ground his way to 37 (105) and some steadiness was once again restored to Aus in the company of Marcus North.
