Gibbs and Amla didn’t get off to ideal stuff, but it was in part due to some fantastic bowling by Nathan Bracken. Incidentally, there’s some fascinating bits of conversation with Bracken here, as he runs up to bowl each delivery. Keeping on this aspect unique to T20 cricket, look out for Ricky Ponting referring to Shaun Tait as “Built like Tarzan, plays like Jane.”
Just like the 1st T20 game, it was one-man Duminy again, with hrdly anyone supporting. But South Africa made up for it during their first 10 overs while bowling through shrewd tactics like captain Botha opening the bowling (his figures 4-0-19-0), bowlers being given 1 over spells and the like. It was SA’s game to a certain extent until the big moment happened – Mark Boucher messing a stumping chance of Hussey who was looking pretty much what he has looked in recent times. Such has been Hussey’s form of late that you can actually hear Ian Healy on air suggest that perhaps it was a deliberate attempt to keep Hussey in, in preference to other hitters in the Aussie order. That changed him into IPL Hussey (116 off 54 for Chennai vs Mohali) and in the company of Ponting swung the game back for Aus. A couple of quick wickets including a stunning catch by Duminy of David Hussey provided all the swing-this-way-then-that aspect of T20 cricket. There was another significant moment in the game, when Duminy misjudged a White catch only to see him crack 4 boundaries in a row following that. Ever since Cameron White joined the Bangalore Royal Challengers, I’ve been desperate to see the attacking stuff he was reputed to have. The IPL saw Kallis often preferred over him, and the recent Test tour of India saw almost nothing from White. Finally. Finally.
