Australia, despite Warner providing his if I play well today, I won’t tomorrow moment, played like Australia with both Ponting and Watson looking super in the early stage of their innings. And then Mendis happened.
When Ajantha Mendis flicked the Indian team (barring Sachin and Dhoni – to a certain extent) during their 2008 tour of SL, he was the next big thing on everyone’s minds. And then the ODI repeat tour by India seemed to have sorted him out. The sorting out was piled on during the IPL. If ever Mendis was sitting in a corner somewhere wondering how easily he could be forgotten, someone should have walked up to him and said, Relax, the Aussies are coming. There’s a reason why the cricket world throws spin (Botha – just kidding) at Australia since the departure of Hayden and Gilchrist.
However, Australia recovered pretty decently to set 160 through some super hitting by their lower order – Johnson reading Mendis off the pitch should have embarrassed the others above him.
Dilshan moved to a different country and batting position, but played pretty much the Delhi Daredevil role. Australia despite the Dilshan onslaught worked their way back into the game but just couldn’t find a way to dislodge old adversary Sangakkara – boundaries at just the right time to keep the runs/balls manageable coupled with the a resolute intent to win it for his team – much like KP yesterday vs Pakistan. The final moments feature unspoken interactions between Lee (who was yo-yo-like today) and Ponting and are worth a watch.

I think Aussie’s have been practicing a lot for Ashes. One can notice by looking at their approach towards the game. Its good for them on their upcoming ashes series. England beware of the aussies they might roar at you as they’ve got plenty of practice time and every reason (Overcome the nightmare of thrown out of the tournament)to hit you all over. Unfortunately there was no Bucknor to take decisions from ponting. Srilanka and Windies have made Aussies to taste their own medicine. Hardluck Australia!!!!

aussies chose a 50 over one day specialist team with warner thrown in. When really, they needed big hitting sloggers ferguson , cameron white, Haydn etc. symonds would have been ideal. ponting and clarke, michael hussey are stroke players theyre not suited to 20/20. brett lee’s been out for a while so not on the ball. poor performance all round from the aussies. its the end of an era for them.
yes i agree india and south africa are the two favorites to win. pakistan look out of sorts- they dont even have any big hitting sloggers apart from afridi…who doesnt looklike he can even hit the ball at the moment. the pakistani batsmen are all stroke players, they wont get big totals unless they hit tonnes of sixes.

As a proud Australian and a cricket fan, I congratulate SL and WI for their good wins. Australia needs to do some work on the 20/20 version of the game to be competitive – we don’t have it right yet.
Some of the comments on this thread sound like they come from 15 year olds.
Is a shake up of world cricket good for the game? Sure it is – Australia have been on top for a while now and it’s good to see others rise up to threaten us and win. But before Australia, it was WI and before them England. So it’s just a cycle – noone stays on top for ever. No reason for insulting comments – most Australians would be happy to acknowledge a better team on the day if they won fair and square. Can those of you who insult Australians say the same?
