Watch cricket highlights: England vs Australia, 1st ODI at the Oval played on Sep 4, 2009.

Scoreline: Aus 260/5 Callum Ferguson 71, Cameron White 53, Shane Watson 46, Clarke 45
England 256/8 Luke Wright 38 (27), Adil Rashid 31 (23), Owais Shah 40 (48) | Mitchell Johnson 7-34-3

Cameron White moves up the order, 2nd time around, and looks more effective – wish someone could knock his value into Bangalore’s head next time he plays for them in the IPL. The first time Callum Ferguson impacted an ODI (Aus vs NZ), his game was a confusing – was he just lucky or were all those well-placed shots really intentional – sort of thing. Since then, almost every time he’s turned up for Aus, he’s pretty much been of use.

Bopara on the other hand seems to be pleading with the selectors to put him out of his misery – without KP, Bell or Flintoff – you sometimes get the feeling that Wright up the order with Shah is the only reason you’d ever watch the middle overs when England’s batting. As an aside, Trott and Shah batting together would make a nice twitchy visual.

Lee bowled pretty decently especially to Rashid and Wright, barring the penultimate over which had the usual late-in-the-game edges flying around, while Clarke dispelled myths of Ponting stepping down anytime soon.

For England to lose close after a Strauss-Bopara opening combination just reinforces the value of Wright-Rashid.

Fire up Admin!!! Multi task dude….

How wrong was wright LOL little confused on the game of cricket.. no no no it wasnt a stumping dear wrighty.. on ya bike!

  4. Cameron says:

Well put ray, Yeah, it should never have come that close, I’m still not convinced that brett should be in the limited overs matches, He MUST stop bowling no-balls. But i think Brett Lee Opening the bowling with hilfenhouse, and then with Johnson First change with Pete Siddle. We could be the worlds best test team again.

Shane Watson gave australia a great start (as allways) and bowled great with the ball (including that boundary that white decided to add to Watson’s name…..) BUT… Ferguson played amazingly well and in the end, was the difference between the sides.

FINALLY!!!! The Weather DIDNT save england!!! its the only reason that eng won the ashes and the only reason england didnt get slaughtered in the T20 matches!!!
Don’t feel to upset england, you only ever flook victories anyway

  5. Dan says:

Obviously some desperate and bitter convicts. The ashes are where they belong.

  6. naz says:

well played Australia.England was just lucky to win the ashes and negative cricket from Ricky ponting.
Lee is back, he is a very good wicket taking bowler but 10 years of international cricket he still the same. The line and length along with his speed could have made him a legend.
I don’t understand how everyone forgetting Tait.He is only 26 and he is a proven performer as long as he is fit to play selectors should bring him in.Lee, Tait and johnson in oneday then Hilfenhaus, Siddle and johnson in Tests and Nannes,Tait and Johnson in T20 what an attack!!!!!!!

  7. Cameron says:

Dan seriously we arnt convicts…. if you pay attention in school, you would know that all your convicts went to america, and about 10% stayed in oz, and now i think its less then 5% of our population has english convict ancestry. OMG! i figured out what english beer actually is!! ok, eng beer is worm and flat… (and taste like piss)…. so they clearly pay aussies to drink great tasting aussie beer, and piss in a cup, so the poms can then drink it!

And Btw You know why the poms get so excited when they win the ashes? Because its such a rare occasion that they actually have them! so enjoy them while you can, because remember the last time eng went to oz? oh thats right! a 5-0 white wash! its going to be the same result! (oh and btw, the poms only ever talked about when they won the ashes in 05, so now oz can just talk about 07)

  13. Daveo says:

good tight game – thanks for extended coverage Admin.

I think getting Wright out with that brilliant Keeper runout was the critical moment in this game – he seemed to be playing very well.

How’s White’s incorrect call for the boundary? Shut up you goose and let the Umpire, umpire!
