Watch cricket highlights: England vs Australia 2nd Ashes Test Day 1 from Lord’s played on July 16, 2009.
Scoreline: England (won the toss): 364/6 – Andrew Strauss 161 no, Cook 95 | Hilfenhaus, Johnson 2 apiece
Fore-Play: Possibly the worst morning of test cricket that I’ve watched in the last couple of years – Alastair Cook slapping around one of my favourite players, Johnson. Strauss however was good to watch – I suppose anyone would, batting alongside Cook. While Johnson conceded the most, none of the Australian bowlers really looked threatening through this session. Things however began to swing the Aussie way post-lunch with Hilfenhaus (mostly) and the others finding some swing, while North showed he’s a cunning bowler despite being wide of offstump mostly. My comp attempted suicide while the Hauritz dislocation was happening. So not too much of that incident there here.
Mitchell Johnson’s career has been backed a lot by Ponting and even today he kept going back to him and by the end of day’s play, Johnson appeared to be looking less miserable.
Pietersen looked super but also headed towards a public lynching when he almost handled the ball. Too bad that knock ended prematurely. Gallant Sir Collingwood however didn’t get a chance to repeat his Cardiff thing in the 1st innings of a test match which is a good thing for the neutral viewer.
All in all, honest end-of-day’s-play hindsight would concede that a fantastic unbeaten knock occurred at Lord’s today alongside a good comeback by the Aussies.
Pre-Play: All romantic notions unfortunately dismissed – Harmison watches on. Flintoff however is playing, while Onions replaces Monty – as indicated by Strauss (post-match of the 1st Test) where he said something to the effect of – get away from the emotion of this test and think with a calm head to pick the best side to take on the Australians.
Love the last comment from the commentary team…”I dislocated a finger playing for Derby….didn’t even know it was dislocated it was so cold”…
As an Aussie living the US where…possibly the only bright spot on the video!!
GOOD CRICKET FROM ENGLAND IN 1ST DAY
what’s the song in the beginning of the video

Admin, many thanks for this excellent service. Is there any chance you could put the URL advert in a less obtrusive place, like the bottom right-hand corner? If your intention is merely to let people know about the site, and not to make viewing the videos less pleasant, I mean…
I know its really annoying but I’ve been left no choice – many cricket highlights sites uses these vids. Some go further and rebrand them as theirs. This is the only way to prevent them doing so. It can get really pissing off after a while – Admin
Who is Warne talking about in the third vid? Is it Bopara? But then he says Andy Bichel had to pull him aside twice…
And as always, excellent work. I have been watching almost all your vids pretty much since you started putting them up and your editing skills have really improved. Not that they were bad initially but now you are getting really artsy…if you know what I mean
Cheers
Was Shane Warne talking about Bopara in the last video? What was it with the arrow above Nassar Hussein?
Yeah it was Bopara – just found Nasser’s expressions funny and cool. Stupid arrow actually – Admin
Bopara plays his county cricket for Essex. As did Nasser.

OH admin…what a great service u are doing to mankind..by showing us these highlights…i think it wont be surprising if ppl start comparing u with GOD in the coming years…and your stupid arrows..how modest of you to call them stupid…
Dear Admin,
It would be nice if you keep a separate video for ‘fall of wickets’
wow england acually played well!
With the kind of start that England got they should have been in a better position.Credit to Australia for pegging away at wickets.
Great site.
Just wanted to say thanks for the highlights. I am a brit in Canada and this is really keeping the homesickeness at bay. Keep the videos coming!
Hi, could you also post the pre and post match ceremony also?
Thanks for the highlights, especially 1st Test Day 5 (long highlights then usual)
op, appreciate the highlights, but can you just stick to the highlights and refrain from “no sense” comments like…
“Possibly the worst morning of test cricket that I’ve watched in the last couple of years – Alastair Cook slapping around one of my favourite players, Johnson.”
I have noticed many similar comments lately in your commentaries which are distasteful at best. Try to appreciate the pressure these players play under and a nice looking and attacking 95 opening the innings are very rare. Hope the success of the site if any does not get to your head like the first hit gets to bollywood stars!
This is a highlights site not a blog – so you just stick to watching the h/ls and don’t read the incidental text. I like some players. I hate some players. As long as i don’t let my bias spill into the h/ls I don’t see any room for complaint. – Admin

mate, write whatever you please. as long as you keep putting up these clips you could insult me and my dad to high heaven. thanks a bunch and keep up the good work (as you please).
to those that request/demand, if you can’t do better, be happy with what you found here.
mate, write whatever you want. as long as the clips keep coming, you can insult me and my dad to high heaven if you wish. great work and keep it up (however you wish).
awesome editing with the highlights, you do a good job of adding humor to them (ponting’s appeal, arrow on naseer hussain as he sat there doing nothing), keep them coming!
Thanks for posting Admin.
Well well – good to see England have got some fight in them! Strauss and Cook played very well – congrats to you both. This might be a competitive series after all – I hope so.
Aussie bowlers – well slow start, but at the end a pretty even day’s play. I hope Johnson can get it together a bit more – we’re relying on him.
David.
