Too bad Lee not being picked just had to be there to offset the joy of watching Harmison return to international cricket. The brilliance was there in patches, and a pretty decent opening day for him.
Lee eventually was not missed as Clark set things up while Siddle (the man Lee would most likely have replaced) took 5 – about time some wickets were added to the heart-thing that is so often bandied about when Siddle’s being talked about.
Ricky Ponting was booed yet again by sections of the crowd more in defiance to the diktat that booing be stopped than anything else. If that wasn’t the reason, it would rank as one of the silliest things from a cricket crowd cos today (despite the English collapse) was all about Ponting playing somewhere near his best. From a viewing point of view, would have liked the knock to go on and on.
Around a year back, I recall watching an interview with Ponting where he said one of his priorities was changing his body-language which at times he felt came across too aggressive. He seems to have improved that aspect for sure – watch him, despite the heavy boos after his dismissal, acknowledge the sections of the English crowd that were giving him a standing ovation.
Stuart Broad meanwhile bowled his best spell of the series and picked two in the process. So some hope there for England going into Day 2 without Flintoff.
