England vs Australia 5th Ashes Test Day 4 Highlights

Watch cricket highlights: England vs Australia 5th Test from the Ashes, Day 4’s play from The Oval played on August 22, 2009.

Scoreline: Australia in pursuit of 546 were 348 all out: Mike Hussey 121, Ricky Ponting 66, Haddin 34 | Swann 4, Harmison 3. England win back the Ashes

When the Ashes got underway, it seemed a pretty even contest loomed. But with KP out and Flintoff’s injury, I’m not sure how many seriously gave England a chance at the Ashes (at least, I thought, it had tilted towards Aus). So super effort by them even with Flintoff being half-fit.

Ponting walked in and immediately adopted the approach he’d employed with limited success in India a year back – playing spin off the backfoot. But once he’d settled in, along with Hussey, the serious possibility of a runchase began to filter in lightly – until the man who looked the most jaded and tired on the field for most of the morning decided he just had to stamp himself on yet another Ashes Test. All in all, super knocks by Ponting and Hussey that promised much more, and happy Flintoff did get in, in some role.

Ponting wasn’t booed today as he walked in – the change began yesterday when he shed a little blood. Seems funny and weird when you think about it. Shaking with Freddie helped too, I suppose.

Meanwhile, Harmison entered the day’s play late and appeared destined to provide nothing more than comic relief with his Peter Crouch-like warmup routines. Eventually he got a bowl, but then appeared to be doing a Gillespie in India, 2001 – bowl super and yet be denied wickets. Happily for everyone, he too got his moment in an Ashes series and life’s good.

Pre-Play: The Ashes to the neutral is pleading for a Ponting special and a Flintoff burst

  2. admin says:

Have opted for AB Devil’s youtube suggestion as a temporary solution for the streaming haters.

  3. Govind says:

thanks guys – Its a relief the video was on youtube although I realize its not a permanent option – but it was really painful trying to watch it from the other streaming site the past 2 days

  4. Thomas says:

Hi admin, love your great work…but do you think you could do the same for days 1-3?? I’m dying to see Ponting hit in the face.
    Thanks in advance..

Well, the slow buffering is more when lots of people are on a video – so you can safely watch those days now – it should stream fine – Admin

  5. james says:

admin where can i get the stream?

  6. Leong15 says:

admin – don’t let the haters get you down. You’re doing a fantastic job with the streaming videos.

Having said that, the YouTube for day 5 may be a better short-term idea for now for the expected increase in traffic over the next 24 hrs.

  7. Chethan says:

Keep up the good work Admin-man!! Excellent reporting!! It was like I was there watching past four days of exciting Ashes cricket!

  8. cricki says:

youtube not a bad idea admin no buffering more people can enjoy your videos thanks

  9. Vivek says:

Dear Admin, Excellent work and it tells a lot about your passion, the pain you take to post the highlights. This Ashes has been fantastic, if not as good as 2005, and I was able to really enjoy watching each day’s highlights. Thanks a lot… really appreciate it! Vivek/Cleveland

  10. fadi says:

wow England on the top once again

  13. Francis says:

    Hi Admin,

I just wanted to thank you for this site. As a cricket fan in the US, this is the best (and only) way to get my cricket fix.

  14. shaunyk says:

Hi, Great work – thqnks a lot! One thing. I’ve found that buffering is no hassle if you just click on it and pause it for 20 minutes while you have a beer and then watch it. It’s true I am biased because I can’t view the youtube versions – I get a message saying not available in my area due to copywrite reasons. Just thoght you should know! Thanks anyway it’s been a fantastic way of keeping up whilst not living in the uk. Cheers! Shaun (Tarifa)

  15. Francis says:

    Okay, I understand. Thanks!

  16. Madaboutcricket says:

    Dear Admin,

Thanks for all your efforts, they are much appreciated.

  17. Anand says:

    admin,

Thanks for informing us as to why the restriction message comes up for parts 2 and 3 (funny that it doesn’t show up for the first one). Would really appreciate if it’s fixed.

    Thanks for your efforts.

  18. maneesh says:

  19. Suhas says:

Ok thanx admin ;) I could only see part 1,having same probs with part 3 as well :( Hoping U will fix it by 2morrow.

Well I just can’t wait 2 see the Aussies being thrashed in this manner. What a feeling it is & it gives me immense pleasure 8) :D Just bcoz of a few whiners on this site, now all of us have 2 suffer :x Admin plzz try not 2 get affected by such comments & don’t give it much importance.U r doing an excellent job,so keep it up!

  20. Sam says:

22.15GMT.. can’t wait.. your highlights package has been a m a z i n g.. it has always been worth the wait.. and thanks a lot for such a great job.. keep it up..

  21. DirtyPixel says:

Thanks to c-o.tv for all their sterling hard work throughout the series :-)

Unfortunately, it just sums up this sh*tpot country (UK) that there is no way for those of us who were working today to enjoy highlights of a rare sporting day of triumph outside of restrictive broadcasting options. Given the dire state of this country and the overwhelming misery here right now, you’d like to think that nobody would grudge it’s population the chance of viewing some uplifiting history.

I genuinely hate this f**king country now and the dictators of doom that run it.

Well done to all the lads though and thanks for bringing a little sunshine to our sh**ty country.

  22. senthil says:

    Excellent job. thanks :-)

  23. shaunyk says:

Admin, you’re an absolute gent! If it helps, youtube part one works but part three doesn’t. Maybe that had something on it which allowed it slip through the net?

    Thanks v much anyway!

  24. Max Fightmaster says:

Thanks so much for that! I just can’t understand the ferocity with which they persue these things. Footage of goals taken from the stands by phones will get taken down from youtube too, often.

  25. Hugh says:

    Brilliant, Admin. Thanks very much!

  26. KP says:

Admin, buddy, your website has been and is absolutely brilliant. Thanks mate. Just great. Slow buffer or not, you’re incredible!

  27. Francis says:

Have you tried hosting the files at a different place?

  28. Zahir says:

Hey Admin, thanks for doing this. I think part 2 is incompleted. It does not go to the end of 9 mins. finishes lot early. So we could not see how the 2 wickets( 3rd n 4th) fell..it wud b great if u can have a look…

Try a refresh after a while – you won’t be required to stream it all again as the streamed portion will be there in your cache. Use Firefox if possible, works best- Admin

  29. Rahul says:

Clips II and III after a while stop playing. I was wondering if something is wrong with the clips for Day IV. Thanks.

  30. sean says:

    thanks…………….some of them not workin

  31. Zeppelin says:

Buffering is painfully slow. But, anyway, thanks for the videos.

  32. Rob in Denver says:

Thanks mate….you are a truly wonderful fella. Thankyou for giving an Aussie in Denver the chance to keep in touch with the game I love.

The ASHES series is still one of the most prestigious and competitive series in world cricket. I love the game. Played it at a high level and actually played professionally in England as a young pup. Congrats to the old Foe…….the POMS deserved it….but it still hurts every true blooded Aussie…no matter where they are located around the world. Long live Test cricket!!! Well done England….enjoy your well deserved festivities!

Bloody oath that is hard to say…………oh well

    Robbie in Denver

  33. rakesh says:

thank you guys, great work and really great cricket played by both teams.

  34. Brij says:

    thanks

  35. Ahmed says:

whats that song? (clip 4, 5:49)??? great work admin

  36. Dave says:

As an Englishman living in NZ I am indebted to you for all the highlights throughout the series, especially the effort to get these final clips up. Much appreciated. Cheers!

  37. umair says:

Their is no doubt admin is doing good job. But it is very slow in my computer, though my internet connection is very good. I really appreciate if you can make streaming of videos much faster.

    Thanks

  38. usman says:

HI Admin great effort,im having the same problem as zahir the 2nd and 3rd part finish way before the end so cant c the runouts

  39. sushant says:

    Hey admin,
Iam so happy to see the whole ashes thru ur site. Thanks a lot for ur efforts. Iam indian and I love england win ashes.

  40. JonnyBag says:

Yay, Admin & England save the day

  41. kpatil says:

yeah the video is only for 1:52 seconds. The remaining video is missing.

  42. Geno says:

Great stuff, but where is the Clarke runout dismissal in the 2nd innings?

  43. admin says:

The Clark dismissal is right at the end of Video 2. It appears as though for some users the clip is not running completely. It could well be a browser related issue. In general try to use Firefox with this site – you could download it and use it just for accessing this site. Also, a free flash player downloadable from Adobe is required. In some cases, even if you don’t have the player, a weird looking video may still display and cause issues. So better to install the flash player.

  44. admin says:

@Ahmed: It’s The Jester’s Dance by In Flames – no connection with the title in its use. Felt sorry for the desolate looking Ponting and thought the music fit

  45. Rony says:

Thanks a lot Admin. Feels great to see the highlights at last.

  46. Ruan says:

i live next to the oval and the roars were deafening. england played a brilliant game and the ausies gave it their best. out of the few times england wins, this was truly an amazing victory. its pretty clear that ponting ook one on the cheek.

  47. Pete says:

Great work Admin. For those of us who don’t have the good fortune of being able to see the action live, we’re very grateful for the opportunity of seeing this great action – many thanks!!

  48. Daveo says:

congrats England. You played better on the day and deserved to win. I think all hopes of Australia pulling off a miracle ended with Katich and Watson getting out so early on day 4 – when at the end of day 3 there was a chance. If they’d added another 50 for the loss of the 1st wicket it could’ve been a different story. And how cruel were those 2 run outs! Ouch…

Anyway – thanks again Admin. Everyone appreciates your efforts. Pay no attention to the idiots – because they’re idiots their opinion doesn’t count. It’s like: I want the world and I want it now and for free. If I don’t get it, I’m going to chuck an tantrum! You’re doing a great job – so hats off to you.

I think it’s good for test cricket to see Oz fall here – despite me being Australian. Oz will only get better as a result and we’re in a team re-building phase – so can’t expect to win every game like we used to. Some of the young fellas had a great series – North, Siddle, Hilfenhaus, Watson, etc. so the future’s looking good – but may take another year or two. Till then, good luck to the other teams.

Good to see Hussey finally get some runs this series too. He looked great at the end, but he was scratching around like an old chook early on lol.

  49. Digby says:

I have to add to the thanks to you, Admin, for even doing this at all. With the time difference, it’s been great to find a place where I could catch up with the game visually each day. Was wonderful to finally be able to see Freddie’s run out of Ponting (sorry Oz :) ) after having only been able to read it on the As It Happened text feed on the BBC’s site. So no worries (I lived in Oz for 6months and ‘no worries’ stuck itself like a limpet to my vocabulary with about a day – and I love it) about the delays – like Daveo said, it’s great that it’s even possible to watch the highlights at all. Thanks once again :) .

  50. Kelvin says:

Thanks so much for posting all these videos. For some reason the last two videos from Day 4 just stop after playing a little. I’m dying to see the final wickets fall! Is there a known problem still? Thanks again.

  51. andy says:

Hi, great victory for England, but still Ponting is the best to captain his team with great courage, administrator can you upload 2nd video again, its not plying after 4min, thanks for the website, good one.

  52. Sree says:

Using Firefox also doesn’t help me watch Clip II above. it goes as far as 185-2.
    Could you please fix it?

    Thanks for your hardwork,
    Sree

  53. admin says:

I’ve put the clips directly – perhaps that should help

  54. youtitta says:

Great work Admin. As an Aussie in Sweden this site sooths my void.
On part II it ends at lunch. Is the prob my end?
    Cheers

Have you tried now. Just changed things around? – Admin

  55. Kelvin says:

The direct clip links you posted take me to s login page for a site I have never seen before, not to any video clips. -

  56. Sree says:

I get to see now until 6 minutes 11 seconds at 207-2 (Swann’s delivery to ponting)

  57. Kelvin says:

I’ll re-try on Firefox. I was trying Safari on my Mac and Chrome on Windows before.

  58. abhi says:

    good work admin

  59. Vijay says:

What a wonderful ashes series at the end, in the year 2009. Well Done england for the great efforts to regain the ashes. Andrew proved himself to be the best captain. Great job by flintoff, harmison, board, Swann n even the others…IT WAS A WELL DESERVED WIN. CONGRATULATIONS TO ENGLAND. Aussies could nt played to their best with few errors…Watson proved to be good opening pair with katich…good effort by all the aussies. Will pointing in the next ashes…Hopefully aussies will bounce back STROGN this time.GOOD LUCK. Thnx for the wonderful work Admin.Thnx once again.

  60. Kelvin says:

It’s working again in all browsers now. Seems you changed the player and it is working great. Thanks again so much for letting us enjoy the Ashes from afar!

  61. admin says:

Some may have noticed the diff player – when you press play – unlike the earlier one, there is no clock sort of thing that winds down buffering time. Just wait for a while and it will play, though it may appear like nothings going on.

  62. tim says:

not a great quality series really australia dominated england came thorugh when needed and good on them they had 2 centuries scored and 2 of the top 5 wicket takers but they put too much pressure on and it showed even from when they were 5/100 or whatever they were in the first test if that was australia they wouldve gone easily 10/150 and broad bowled very nicely in that 1st innings of the fifth test…still not sure about strauss having the most impact but he was the better captain…

im a hussey fan hopefully he can come through against pakistan

thanks admin i dont mind the slowness at all at least i get to watch some cricket in south america!!! thanks for the quick posts as well

  63. Ahmed says:

In reply of “@Ahmed: It’s The Jester’s Dance by In Flames – no connection with the title in its use. Felt sorry for the desolate looking Ponting and thought the music fit”
haha…did fit well…lol i thought the broadcasters did pretty good live editing to fit that music in at first :P
thanks for the song… keep it up

  64. andy says:

thanks for the updated video admin,,,

  65. Pete_the_mackem says:

Just wanted to thank the owners of this site – I missed the final test as I was at a music festival, so it was great to be able to catch up with so many highlights. Thanks very much. Oh, and to people complaining about the slowness, if you don’t like it, you know what to do.
