Watch cricket highlights: England vs Australia – 5th Ashes Test, Day 1 from the Oval played on August 20, 2009.

Scoreline: Eng 307/8 – Ian Bell 72, Andrew Strauss 55, Jonathan Trott 41 | Peter Siddle 4 wickets

It’s always impotent to yarn about selectorial stuff when you belong to the powerless and voiceless class. Because it reminds you that you’re alive. So anyway, England have often (with good reason) in recent times been associated with conservative moves but today, it was them that picked Harmison ahead of Onions and Australia who dumped Lee. Eventually, at least for the 1st innings, it hasn’t mattered cos the man Lee would have replaced – Siddle – took crucial wickets. But just the thought of a potentially destructive bowler and all the expectation leading up to this final test would have made him the perfect addition to the Ashes.

The pitch on offer initially tended to confuse one into thinking dull cricket lay ahead for most of the day, and that was indeed the case (apart from Bell-Johnson in patches). However, by the end of play, it’s become clear that this should turn into a fitting climax to the series cos the best of the batsmen (in particular) and bowlers will be called up over the next few days.

And that’s where Lee and Flintoff on either side would have been perfect. At least Harmison is around, thankfully.
