Going by what he’s shown in his short career so far, this wasn’t Umar Akmal’s most spectacular knock, but that’s where Pakistan showed traits of being a champion T20 side – they didn’t require individual brilliance to post a total and later defend it. On the other side, McCullum seemed to understand that him staying till the end was possibly the only way NZ were going to get there, once Taylor and Guptill left. Oddly though, he didn’t get too much of the strike in the first half of their innings. And Afridi and his team (as it’s now being looked at) went on to their 7th consecutive T20 win.
Given the flickering nature of Afridi’s career until the World Cup, he hopefully should be mentally attuned enough to understand that those that adore him today could well turn against him tomorrow. For the sake of Afridi the player, the impotent selection committee therefore decrees that he shouldn’t be given the ODI captaincy anytime soon, until a relatively stable team has been assembled.
