New Zealand vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Day 3 Highlights

Watch cricket highlights: New Zealand vs Sri Lanka 1st Test, Day 3 from Galle played on August 20, 2009.

Scoreline: NZ 281/8 – Jesse Ryder 42, Ross Taylor 35, Tim McIntosh 69 (226) | Muttiah Muralitharan 37-9-66-3, Thushara 3 wickets

The day’s play really kicked off only post lunch with Muralitharan plunging into an extended spell of brilliant offspin bowling on a track that wasn’t particularly turning. McIntosh had whispered in my ear on Day 2 that he’d be taken out by a Murali doosra, and that’s pretty much what happened but not before he’d tried his best to lull viewers into soft slumber with a 226 ball 69 that didn’t help his team too much apart from eating up time on a venue that seems vulnerable to the weather.

Ultimately, it came down to the glimmer twins Taylor and Ryder to get New Zealand past the follow-on threat and from a viewing point of view, either of them should have stuck around longer.

But Murali made up for all that showing the vast gulf between him and Mendis which some chose to bridge when Ajantha exploded on the Indians’ faces back in 2008.

Preplay: Ross Taylor and Ryder to look forward to, today
