Watch cricket highlights – Pakistan vs England from the 2009 T20 World Cup.

Scoreline: England 185/5: Kevin Pietersen 58 (38), Luke Wright 34 (16), Owais Shah 33 (32) – Umar Gul 4-37-2, Saeed Ajmal 4-23-2
Pakistan 137/7: Younus Khan 46 – Stuart Broad 3-17-3

England after being effectively knocked out of the tournament are now back in it irrespective of the Netherlands-Pakistan game, by virtue of the margin of defeat today.

Pakistan started off the game making the befuddling decision to play Arafat ahead of Tanvir. Despite their initial charged-up start, Pakistan soon fell away in the field as the England batting did a switch-hit (compared to the previous game) with Wright partnered by Pietersen playing possibly his best T20 innings ever.

Umar Gul was stand-out for Pakistan despite Ajmal having the better figures, while Stuart Broad bounced right back today after all those countless replays of him missing the stumps in the Netherlands game played endlessly on television channels.

The Pakistan chase seemed centred around Duckworth-Lewis pottering onto the ground – it’s hard to else explain the lack of intent to score boundaries with Malik and Younus getting together. That’s exactly the kind of pair you don’t want together at the same time in a T20 game chasing 180 plus. Maybe I’m skewed, but I’ve never liked Malik – he came into the Pakistan team as a poor copy of Saqlain, ended up replacing Mushtaq in ODI cricket and then flattered to deceive with his batting. To have Misbah come in with 20 odd deliveries left seems ridiculous.

While it has to be agreed that Afridi over the last couple of years has been in the team for his bowling, the Pakistan management’s handling of him seems unfair – more often than not, battling as he is to regain his striking abilities, he’s thrown into situations (around 100 needed in 8 overs) that require those rare moments that are so far and few in sports, let alone cricket – like an Ivanisevic winning Wimbledon. An opening or one-down role in a chase would at least remove the pressure of having to do the unthinkable while also scoring fast. And slowly get him somewhere near his prime.

The problem with this Pakistan batting performance is that it was so mystifying, it ended up overshadowing how well England played today.

In short, one conclusion can be drawn – the later a guy sleeps at night, the more impotent his opinions become. So guess, I’ll call it quits for today. Oh, and if you’re a Pakistan viewer, don’t watch the last bit of the 2nd video where Younus Khan talks post-match. You might just bust an artery.

Pregame: Pakistan’s first game. Their warm-up vs India wasn’t convincing, but considering the way Pakistan plays its cricket, they could well snap out of it. Can this 2009 World Cup be Afridi’s to ravage. The fans remain hopeful. Pietersen had in a recent interview mentioned he’d be packing in the switch-hit for a while and had instead come up with other ideas for this World Cup. Hope he plays, so we could see all that.

aus was f**cked by windies very very badly
symonds is also gone…aussie are definitely going down

  31. t20 says:

did anyone count on the number of drop catches when england were batting

  32. Why are pakistan doing bad ? says:

Yunus Khan alone is doing well and all the remianing senior players are not taking any responsibility. Afridi is ‘needless’ inclusion in the team but then he is someone u cant ‘have’ or ‘leave out’. The most balanced sides are India and south Africa. I cant see any other team winning the cup except these two. I think because netherlands is +1.5 on NRR and pakistan on negative, they have to beat netherlands very very badly to make it to the next level which seems highly unlikely. Its sad yunus’s capataincy isnt working. But then its too early to judge. India on the other hand is doing awesome. I would like to see Yusuf Pathan higher up the order, Dhoni should realize how devastating he could prove out to be for the opposition but then Yusuf never gets real support from dhoni Its always been selectors inclusion. Anyways good luck to your respective teams. I hope either India, Saouth Africa or my divine miracle pakistan shows some good play and make it there.

  33. t20 says:

the only team i do not wanna see winning is australia…

  34. sahil says:

It is sad to see that pakistan is fading away slowly and its not as strong as it used to be…. i am strong indian team supporter but still i wont be happy to see pakistan going out in first round. I feel sorry for them because they lack practise of T20.

  35. Phobia says:

Pakistan and Pakistani cricket ko nazar lag gayi hai.
    Poor Pakistan.
    They deserve to win.

  36. Farhan Azmat , Denmark says:

Pakistan didnt played so much cricket like indian players thats why having some problems….They shall recover soon inshallah… No doubt india is playing very well in these days…

  37. t20 says:

    well..ur right farhan..
it is rough time for pakistan cricket..
seriously these days indian team has been lucky…
who would have thought that Sachin Tendulkar’s absence in any form of game would not be felt.. Dhoni is lucky for the team..

    I still miss akram,anwar,waqar,inzi and moin…good old ’90s

  38. f**kpak says:

i have just started fielding coaching batch for pak team for absolutely free specially for catch practice

come and join if you want to win this T20 WC only few seats are available

  39. criclover says:

did pakistan had gone for match fixing? I love to see pakistan play well being the runner-up in the last edition of t20.

  40. Rizza says:

I thought Pakistan team willwake up after the practice matches and will some to real world, from dreams, but it was not the case to be. the old saying goes “as you sow, so shall you reap”. Pakistan does not have a balance side, send Misbah in at 16th over, and fielding th eway they have been doing, and not even adering to the basics of the game is arescipy for failure. I think India, South Africa nd West Indies, could be th eone of the winner. Looking at present form, India will have to have a really really bad in day in the field to loose. Other wise their team combination, batting , bowling and fielding is at the top of the game in this format. For Pakistan team they should stop beleiving on miracles and start making the effort to play better and basic cricket. They need to get Razzq in the team and couple of more changes will deifinately not hurt their cause.
Good Luck to all the supporters and cricket lovers. Please be cricket lovers and do not spoil the fun and the game and do not let prfanity leand your emotions. Thanks!!

  41. Roshan says:

Pakistan dropped too many catches. Also lots of misfield s.If they took those catches, UK restricted to lower score & easy to follow.Although Pakistan haven’t had much cricket recently, I’m very pleased with their performance. ALL THE BEST PAKISTAN!!! – Roshan (Sri Lanka)

  42. Chinmoy Roy says:

” ANE DE ” Koun aega aja because asli champion is INDIA…………
