Mitchell Johnson and Dale Steyn take down the day. In fact, all the fast bowlers were cannibalistic today – Morkel too had a far better day than yesterday.
A day of fast bowling-induced collapses for both sides. Only, the SA collapse was more dramatic cos of blood on the pitch and a broken finger. Two retd hurts (Smith and Kallis)- not seen apparently since 1976 when Holding vs India sent a few players to the hospital.
On Day 5 of the 1st test, this blog wondered about two players – Phil Hughes and JP Duminy – both had questions facing them about the short ball, but the potential too, to tackle it. Well, the answer’s come pretty soon – Hughes scored a hundred and Duminy played one of the finest test innings of recent times.
Johnson cut Kallis and with the blood flowing, he left – his return a little later however was short-lived. In the case of Graeme Smith, Johnson has apparently knocked him out of the series with a broken finger. The right hand this time. Johnson had put Smith out of the ODI series in Australia after damaging the left hand. So a mad day for the batsmen except JP Duminy who was pleading for someone to stay with him – Steyn stuck around till end of play and was not out after battling 39 deliveries.
