Watch cricket highlights of the 3rd ODI – South Africa vs Australia played at Cape Town on April 9, 2009.

Scoreline: 289/6 – AB de Villiers 80, Jacques Kallis 70, JP Duminy 32, Mark Boucher 28 (15). Aus 264/7 – James Hopes 63, Callum Ferguson 63.

Have reduced the quality of the video to enable slightly faster buffering of the video as Sapo still rules among existing video sites.

A tight spell by Mitchell Johnson at the start (5 overs for 6 runs) and support from Nathan Bracken prevented SA from launching. Kallis and de Villiers then took charge of the major chunk of the middle stages, but crucially, SA finished very well to get close to the 290 mark. Our ol’ pal Merwe from the 2nd T20 made an appearance in the final over of the SA innings and entertained during his 4 ball stay.

The finish by SA turned out to be the difference – Clarke continued his unconvincing last few months – I’m not complaining – he seems more subdued in the field now – this wasn’t the case during and just after the India tour when captaincy seemed just a few games away.

Ponting was sucked out by another offspinner – Botha this time. And after that, the Hopes and Ferguson knocks, though of the rebuilding sort, never really kicked off. Ferguson in his short international career already has three 50s. The dilemma posed after his knock vs NZ is getting clearer now – he is an intelligent ODI batsman rather than a lucky one. Not sure if he can finish a game on his own yet, but seems like a good middle order ODI batsman for Aus.

Pregame: Am still recovering from the mauling meted out by Barca in their 4-0 thrashing of Bayern Munich. What an amazing first 15 minutes of football.
