Watch cricket highlights: South Africa vs India Day 5 of the 2nd Test at Kolkata played on Feb 18, 2010
Scoreline: SA (2nd Inn) 290 all out – lose by an innings with around 15 mins to go for a draw – Hashim Amla 123 not out, Parnell and Morkell guts it out for 124 deliveries | Harbhajan Singh 5, Amit Mishra 3, Ishanth Sharma 2 wickets
Anyone who watched this game will remember Amla till their dying breath. However. However, what’s going to be interesting over the next year or so is to see what Amla does with this knock. Will he use it to augment his role in the SA middle order or will it send him in a direction that could see him go the Ashwell Prince way.
Amit Mishra took crucial wickets making Chawla look even more distant while Harbhajan bowled possibly the best he has since Kumble retired. Too many disappointments over the last two years to really start jumping around that the Bhajji recovery is complete though. There was also the strange infiltration of Mitchell Johnson into the Indian team in the guise of Ishanth – looking like crap most of the day but getting two important wickets when things were drifting away. Credit to Dhoni (or whoever was responsible) for continuing to bowl him and more importantly pick him as it’s just a matter of time before he reemerges as the matchwinner that he is.
All in all, ditch the rankings and all that because not many take them too seriously unless it’s your favourite player or team at the top – what’s more noteworthy is that considering the Indians were reduced to pretty much two bowlers with Zaheer out and Ishanth looking groggy from rehabvitaminoverdose for three quarters of the day, there wasn’t too much of the fatalistic sense of doom that used to be a part of the Indian team especially coming after a day of weather interruptions. In this test they played like the best team would and it would be best to take it like that – test match by test match and enjoy the middle order batting while it’s around

Kolkata is always Indian cricket’s revival as was evident in 2001 series with Australia. Kudos to Indian team in this effort to level the series after Nagpur test match. what a test match it has been and thanks to this admin for posting one of the historic test matches of test cricket history. on a lively wicket India proved they have bowlers to win them matches and batasman who can bat and score tons of runs. Great test match India, I’m still not out of the joy and today I will remember through out my life as cricket lover what Indian cricket team has presented to India.

A good series and Ind have shown yet again that unless your on top of your game, they’re near impossible to beat at home. Bhaji as usual steps up when the team needs him most, hopefully (fingers crossed in vain) he will be able to do so at least every other match instead of every 5 matches, especially when Ind middle order soon becomes undone. Still MUCH credit to SA, not too many teams bar Eng who bat right down to #9, would have batted 130+ overs and come so close to drawing (yes their was rain) even when they’ve played about as poor as they did in their 2nd test vs. Eng. They also showed great sportsmanship and made no attempts to waste time.In Hashim Amla they have un-earthed a new world class batsman and their future looks very bright.
Still 1 problem I had is the damn pitch, another dead 1! Little in it for either spin or pace bowlers and that just highlighted the way Bhaji bowled and the Mishra’s wicket of Kallis which to me won Ind the match. The pitch also help to injure Zak…for the umpteenth time and shows the blatant disregard that the curators have for such a fine bowler.

SA hve choked it again . they hve the chance 2 win . on the first day in the last session they hve lost the match wen they lost the 9 wickets . and exprince of vvs laxman helped the india 2 square the series .
SA did well to draw the series– Steyn and Amla were their standouts. But let’s not forget that India were without *3* starters in Nagpur: sheet-anchor Dravid, Laxman (we saw what he can do here in Eden Gardens) and Yuvraj (usually cameos, but occasionally is solid in Tests). Looking forward to the series in SA later this year!

Come on why is it people still like to bring up the whole Dravid, Laxman, Yuraj (I don;t rate him that much) missing thing in every blog a whole week after the matter. SA played better in the 1st match and they won, Ind played better in the 2nd match and won FULL STOP. Give credit where credit is due. Show good sportsmanship.They made 1 change in Laxman and won very convincingly, SA made 1 change in Boucher and lost convincingly. The only diif. in the 2 matches is that SA almost drew the 2nd with the help of lost overs. It proved 2 things: Ind played better overall than they did in the 1st test, Laxman or no Laxman and SA played alot worse than they did in the 1st, Boucher or no Boucher.

ms dhoni is not a fluke captain
he is a fighter never let his team go for a defeat.
Even though his batting technique doesnt sound good but great player applies to different situations and he a floater he can bat in any order and win the matches or save the matches.He has been NO.1 ranked player since 2 years.

Dhoni is a clever captain, see how he made ishant bowl from round the wicket just to create rough ares for harbhajan to bowl to.
Harbhajan later on went on to take duminy and styen in quick succession.
Thats the beauty of test cricket.
Having said this, I would repeat that only difference between win and a draw/loss is Sehwag.
Sehwag, zaheer and harbhajan hold the X-factor to take india to no 1 postion that they are currently in, clearly a deserving one.

A gruelling test match finally came to an end with India taking the honors. Hats off to team India for such a great comeback.. Reminds me of the series against Aus and the common factor had to be “Eden Gardens”.
What do I say about Hashim Amla? Terrific series for this man.. always as cool as a cucumber and delivering every time. I am sure this performance of his is one of the all time greats and will be recognized in the year to come.

Duminy and prince were too out of form to be playing really. Smith was injured. Can’t carry three batsmen and hope to win a series. Only Amla aka God kept them in with a shout. The real question is why there was a two match series at all. Duke it out over 3 or 5 or not at all.

Its really an fentastic match after the one where england beat australia in final over during ashes…but India still strugling to get through the tail enders, when they get top batsmen dismissed so cheaply what happens with the tail enders..its been the problem for decades

With test matches, an odd-number of matches is not a guarantee of a definite result: the third match could just as well have been a draw, leaving the series still….well, 1-1.

I am pretty sure Kallis would have carried some weight, no its no gaurantee, he could have easily been out 1st ball o the morning but trust me, if Prince and Morkel could last 50+ deliveries am pretty sure Kallis could, they didn’t lose with 15 overs left ,it was lost with 5 overs AT MOST.

Wow! India wins convincingly. An inning and 57 runs. Even better reply to the 1st Test loss. Also, the fact that one entire day was taken away from India adds to the insult.
Amla did his his job brilliantly. But excluding him, the rest of the SA score card is really sad (excluding Petersen).
Much respect to the Indian bowlers, considering Zaheer was missing. Truly one of the sweetest wins in Indian Test cricket. Almost forgot the fact that we were playing a rank 2 team.

Excellent round up comments from you. Couldn’t agree more with you on any of them. A couple of points to add to yours. Wonder how will the indian middle order shape up over the next couple of years with the retirements of dravid and laxman looming large. Vijay and Badrinath were so so and raina and karthick arent really test material (karthick is too impatient and raina is susceptible to short bowling). I hope the indian selectors use the next few matches, ODI’s and tests to test out some other players too. Dont want a situation were there is a mass exodus of the experienced guys and india goes straight from #1 to #7. BTW look into the feature to enable follow up comments notifications via email. Or facebook connect. Your site is too good to be isolated from the rest of the internet.

@ Admin Woah woah woah! take it easy. I’m no Aussie fan by any stretch but comparing Ishant to Mitchell Johnson is a bit like dissing Mitch. If you compare Ishant to a Stuart Broad who is also capable of bowling a good spells in between the nonsense, then that sounds better like a better comparison. lol
Team India’s performance is incredible in the 2nd test. Its heartening to see boys fiting back hard. SA was complecent on day one, bhujji and zak bowled well on session 3 of day 1.
At this point we can say India is #1, but have to improve on two main areas 1> Bowling 2> Fielding/Catching
There is no doubt in batting department for now, but how long is a question.
Indians are lazy starters in every series and play better in the second, this attitude might have to be changed to be #1.

What an elevating win for India. It corroborates the numero uno position we have.However, bowling left much to be desired. We almost made mess of it and none of the bowlers except Harbhajan in parts look like getting wickets. I wish we had another bowler who could scare batsmen world over. In the meanwhile, we will have to manage with frightful batting supermen we have!

Yea cudos to the Ind team BUT I think people are losing sight of something. Ind did not schedule this series to WIN THE #1 RANK. They scheduled it to STRENGTHEN this position. Whilst they did well to regain it after getting beaten in the 1st test…they really weren’t expecting to be in such a position in the 1st place. For the 2nd consecutive time, they failed to win a home series vs SA.The truth is…they should be worried…very worried. I really hope they don’t relax and think everything is ok…cause that may kill the close contest that I am hoping for when they visit SA later in the yr. I think that series and the Ashes SHOULD be the 2 most competitive series. I wish they started tomorow lol!
