Sreesanth IPL 2008: Tears on a Cricket Field

After the Mohali vs Mumbai game, there was a really disturbing visual of Sreesanth crying uncontrollably in full public view which seemed strange at the time. Eventually, as we all know, it turned out Harbhajan Singh slapped Sreesanth or gave him a ‘hand shake in the wrong place’ as Sreesanth later in a fit of team-bonding loyalty chose to describe the incident. Sreesanth did have minor run-ins during the match with several Mumbai players including friend and business partner (The Bat & Ball Inn in Bangalore) Robin Uthappa. The final straw apparently were the words ‘hard luck’ from Sreesanth to Harbhajan after the match was won by Sreesanth’s Mohali team. Nothing wrong with that so far – tough luck or hard luck are commonly used phrases post a game. So did Harbhajan do a Symonds and hear it wrong – something like ’sad f*ck’. Ya. That must be it.

Pushing, shoving, a few slaps here and there and the use of a cricket bat once in a while like Shoaib Akhtar did are most likely components of any cricket team’s dressing room especially after a loss. It’s just that the cricket public possibly is kept in the dark like it should be. What made this incident odd was the weeping by an international player with the world looking on and a probable slap right on the field – considering the dugout phenomenon in T20 cricket and the fact that Sreesanth was wailing before the presentation got underway, it was most probably handed out in front of other players from around the world. Harbhajan and Sreesanth would later go out of their way calling each other ‘hesmy elderbrother’ and ‘hesmy youngerbrother’. Wonder what would have happened if Sreesanth had said, ‘Harbhajan, you’re my little brother.

There had been underlying simmers between the two that were on display during the Ind-SA series. One particular incident occurred after Sreesanth dropped a catch off Bhajji’s bowling (watch).
