Sri Lankan Cricketers Attacked in Pakistan – Jayasuriya, Inzamam, Miandad Speak

The Sri Lankan team bus came under a terrorist attack in Pakistan this morning (March 3) as they were heading towards Day 3 of the 2nd Test at Lahore. In this video, Sanath Jayasuriya confirms that all the players are ok though some have been injured – Samaraweera was apparently shot in the chest, while Sangakkara, Jayawardene, Mendis, Vaas and Paranavitana were among those injured. The team expectedly is being taken back home immediately. The video also contains contrasting views by both Inzamam Ul Haq and Javed Miandad on future cricket in Pakistan.

Quite a surprising incident – a while back, Imran Khan had urged the Indian team to continue with their tour (which was replaced by this SL tour), saying that terrorists would never attack cricket as they would lose all sympathy for any of their causes. In principle, he’s probably right, but given this incident, which country’s board would dare to send their team to Pakistan at least for another year. Miandad’s argument about England coming back to complete their tour of India doesn’t make sense cos there is no way KP and the rest would step into even Goa if they had been personally attacked. Inzamam’s point about teams being fearful of even playing Pakistan outside of Pak is a scary thought – what happens to the fans of Afridi and Shoaib Akhtar around the world. When and will we get to see them in the near future – considering Pakistan players will not be participating in the IPL.

  5. I think Paranavitana was hit by shrapnel in the chest, not Samaraweera. Samaraweera was shot in the leg.
