Watch a video made up of 138 primal runs off just 78 balls – 16×4, 6×6 – Yuvraj Singh during the 1st ODI in 2008 – India vs England.
Yuvraj Singh before this game had an odd year. 2007-2008 had seen him given a seat in the test team and he reclined there for a while, feet up, with a 169 (203) vs Pakistan at Bangalore– brilliant in its ease and which I was lucky enough to see live. A poor test tour of Australia with amoral pursuits apparently clogging his mind lost him his test place.
Over the next few months, though he always looked in prime form every time he stepped out to bat in ODIs and the IPL, the scores didn’t always share a direct relation with the form. The tour of Sri Lanka even set alight a few whispers about his ODI place, after a highest of 23.
If you look at Yuvraj Singh’s career, he’s done many things right, but not necessarily always at the right time. This knock is the one thing he’s certainly done at just the right time – to leave absolutely no doubt on who should walk into Sourav Ganguly’s spot in the test team.
A stiff back saw him bat out most of this knock with Gambhir running for him. Though every other shot was followed by a grimace, the ease in those shots had several wondering if there was anything at all wrong with Yuvraj’s back. With so much on offer here, it’s hard to pick out the best moments. But couple of weeks have passed by and two things continue to stick in the head:
Stuart Broad in a later spell had the first ball of the over dispatched for a huge six. Now the question is – was he relieved that the next ball was smashed only for four?
Two checked drives off Flintoff – one for six and one just short.
Yuvraj followed this knock with a more controlled hundred in the 2nd ODI at Indore.
